5 Reasons Why Zermatt Should Be Your Next Ski Destination
by Julie Goldman
The Swiss Alps are a common ski destination for many Europeans and skiers from around the world, with so many resort options to choose from. However, Zermatt seems to be at the top of everyone's list. So why is that? From its view of the beautiful Matterhorn mountain to its narrow streets and mountain restaurants, Zermatt offers a special experience to those that are looking for true Alpine style.
Here are our top 5 reasons why you should make it your next ski destination based on our years of travel experience:
Reason 1: It gets voted as the best ski resort time and time again.
Zermatt has been voted as the best ski resort in the Alps, after polling more than 49,000 people. So they might have a point! They were asked to rate several Alpine resorts based on various areas such as the quality and variety of slopes, on-piste safety, entertainment and activity, catering and provision for families. Zermatt topped all of these categories!
Reason 2: Snow conditions all year round.
The best part about Zermatt, is that it offers snow on the glacier all year round! While some skiers would rather wait until peak season when the snow is good enough, others at least know they have the option to rely on great conditions even earlier in the season. Zermatt has 200km of pistes which are filled with snow already from early December. While the slopes are open all year round, the main season usually runs from the end of November to the end of April.
Reason 3: Two countries in one day!
Zermatt is also connected by lift and piste to Cervinia in Italy, which provides another 160km of slopes as well as great snow conditions. The easy gradient slopes and snow conditions are popular with beginners where they can practice in the most beautiful surroundings. Once you’re over the border, Cervinia is a great opportunity to have delicious Italian food and even practice your Italian!
Reason 4: The magnificent Matterhorn view from any direction.
Luckily, Zermatt offers one-of-a-kind views of the most famous alps in the world. It's an incredible feeling to ski surrounded by breath-taking views that enhance your experience even more. No matter where you are in Zermatt, the mighty Matterhorn dominates the skyline. No wonder it is one of the most photographed mountains in the world!
Reason 5: So many après ski choices.
Let's face it, there is nothing like winding down after a long day of skiing with a beer in hand. Zermatt's narrow cobble stone and car-free streets offers you a safe haven with its village like vibes. Zermatt is such a popular destination with a ton of après ski restaurants and boutique shops available for anyone. Not to mention the food is delicious, you cannot visit without trying Swiss chocolate and various cheese based meals like fondue!
No matter what your level of ski is or where you are visiting from, Zermatt really does have it all! It's the perfect destination for your next ski trip with the family or even alone.
